UPDATE: The Display Port function works when connected to an external monitor. Would have taken it into Apple store but we've still got another 3 weeks left of stage 4 lockdowns in Melbourne (potentially extended to 5.) so that will be off the table for a while yet. Is there a way to determine if this is a hardware issue or firmware/port issue, perhaps with the latest Catalina update? (I've attached screenshots below of relevant system info) I have reset NVRAM, SMC (multiple times) to no avail, and have run several diagnostic reports which have all returned with no issues. If you have to absolutley get an external SSD, get one that supports thunderbolt, or even better to get one that supports thunderbolt 2.0.
it seems at least as fast as an internal SSD, and a heck a lot faster than USB 3.0. So it is most definitely an issue on the iMacs end. Regards the speed, thunderbolt delivers about 10Gb/s which is plenty. Initially thought it was the Dock's thunderbolt ports that had gone, but they work when connected to a friend's MBP 13" via the Thunderbolt 2 to 3 Adapter that Apple sells. It can connect via USB3.0, but it is much slower and isn't able to handle the video editing loads I require that thunderbolt 2 delivers.
